What happens to your file

Everything below happens inside your browser, on your own device. The PDF is never uploaded, so nobody else, including us, can see it.

  1. Your browser reads the PDF. Nothing is sent over the network.
  2. Each page is drawn with pdf.js, the PDF viewer built into Firefox, at the quality you choose.
  3. Pages are drawn one at a time and the memory is freed straight away, so long documents also work on phones.
  4. A single page downloads as one image. Several pages come together in one ZIP, named in page order.
In short
  1. Choose a PDF
  2. Pick JPG or PNG and the quality
  3. Choose the pages
  4. Download the images or a ZIP

When people use it

Posting on social media

Most social apps take images, not PDFs. Turn a flyer or a menu into a picture you can post.

Chat apps and slides

An image of one page is quicker to open in a chat than a PDF, and easy to drop into a presentation.

Forms that ask for images

Some upload forms accept only JPG or PNG. Convert the page they want.

Thumbnails and previews

Make a picture of a report’s cover page for a website or an email.

What it can’t do

  • Text in the images is part of the picture and can no longer be selected or searched.
  • Very large pages, such as posters, may be saved below 300 dpi so they fit in your browser’s memory. pdfMB tells you when this happens.
  • PDFs protected with a password or against copying are not accepted.
  • Images of many pages at print quality can add up to a large ZIP.
  • With “Images inside”, very small images (under 32 pixels) and repeated copies are left out. A few PDFs store small pictures in a way pdfMB cannot take out separately.

Questions about PDF to JPG

JPG or PNG: which should I choose?

JPG for photos and when you need small files. PNG for pages that are mostly text, lines or diagrams, because it keeps every edge sharp.

Which quality should I pick?

150 dpi is plenty for phones, screens and social media. 300 dpi is for printing.

Can I convert only one page?

Yes. Press “Save this page” under it, or type its number in “Pages”. A single page downloads as one image, without a ZIP.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The pages are drawn in your browser and the images are made on your device.

Can I get the photos out of a PDF without losing quality?

Yes. Choose “Images inside”. Photos stored as JPG are copied out exactly as they are in the PDF, without being compressed again. Other images are saved as PNG, which keeps every pixel.
